Real hard to get Hobie parts out here, and I just broke my 80's vintage H16 plastic traveller car (the bit that slides in the groove). I THINK that I could get away with fashioning something from a suitable piece of T aluminium extrusion. Do H16's still use plastic cars anyway? I'm not worried about super-slick performance, prefer the car to not move when I'm sheeted in a bit. Anyone else done any non-standard work like this?

Danny,
The IHCA Hobie 16 Class rules state:

2. TRAVELLERS AND TRAVELLER CARS
2.1 Any type of traveller cars that operate in the
HOBIE CAT CO. supplied traveller tracks are
acceptable. The tracks shall not be altered,
changed or added to in any way.

This means that you can make a replacement part and still be Class legal.

I have seen a homemade car that was carved out of a high-density nylon material.
It didn't use any metal rollers or pins.
It seemed to work very well.

Don't use any type of metal for the wearing parts, you will ruin the traveller track and have to replace it too.

For those following with the same problem:

Eventually I got hold of some nylon-type plastic, 15mm x 15mm x about 100mm, and cut it with a hacksaw very carefully with the original as a template. Sanded it down, drilled the hole all the way through, and it works fine.

Hardest thing is to replace the rivets in the track with countersunk rivets.

Danny
