Mast step holes on a H-16

I have had to tweak the bracket when un steppign the mast, I use a Philips screw driver to step the mast it apears to be solid no damage. I unsteped my H 16 with the pin in the 14 hole. no prolems. what would happen if I steped the mast in the 14 hole I have always been able to allign the holes with 16 when stepping just curious

By using the 14 hole, you would possibly break the mast base as the mast would not be all the way up as the link hits it's stop. The momentum of the mast (26 feet and swinging) can break even the strongest base or link. You also need to be sure the link does not allow the base to over-shoot the cup as this too can break out the back of the base or pull the base out of the mast. Newer links are beefed up to help them stay in shape.

Mr. Miller,
I managed to break the mast base step pivot. Having not yet contacted the nearest Hobie dealer for the mast base replacement cost. What's the feasibility of removing the mast base and having the pivot rebuilt at a welding shop? (Experience working with cast aluminum of course).

Rebuild / weld the mast base?

Not sure about welding on castings. There is a significant lever load when stepping the mast, so hopefully the welding shop will know how strong it can be.

Welding typically leaves residual stress in the metal. Part of the strength of the castings comes from the way the metal crystalizes when cooled. Also, any kind of heat treating of the metal will alter the strength of the part.

It would probably be a very good idea to replace teh mast step instead of welding it. Especially if the part is from an older boat. Better safe than sorry, especially when dealing with stepping a mast.
