Mr. Miller,
I managed to break the mast base step pivot. Having not yet contacted the nearest Hobie dealer for the mast base replacement cost. What's the feasibility of removing the mast base and having the pivot rebuilt at a welding shop? (Experience working with cast aluminum of course).

By using the 14 hole, you would possibly break the mast base as the mast would not be all the way up as the link hits it's stop. The momentum of the mast (26 feet and swinging) can break even the strongest base or link. You also need to be sure the link does not allow the base to over-shoot the cup as this too can break out the back of the base or pull the base out of the mast. Newer links are beefed up to help them stay in shape.
