I just bought an 84 Hobie 18 with a comptip mast. I don't believe the mast was ever stored indoors or covered at all during it's life. It's showing some fibers and is heavily oxidized. My question is what is the typical lifespan for a comptip. How many years worth of UV and bending can they take before a person should seriously consider replacing it? The last thing I want to happen is to sheet in around C mark and watch the comptip snap off. Any thoughts? Experiences?

My H18 is an '82 and the comptip has been stored outside and uncovered it's whole life an dI have noticed no structural issues with it. The glass fibers are not showing though. I had an '86 H16 before I got my H18 and it's comptip had the glass showing through. I took some marine tex and filled in where the glass was exposed, then sprayed it with a few coats of black Krylon. IT seemed to do the trick.
