Soft Spot

I just got a Hobie 16 and discovered a soft spot on top of the hull just in front of the tramp mount in the front. The sides of the hull are good. How do I go about repairing a soft spot on top of the hull? Thank you

Hobie Nick Thanks for the information. How deep does the delamination usually go? Is it usually a inch or so or is it more? Also, do I just use a fiberglass resin with hardner or just plain fiberglass resin? This is my first Hobie and did not find this problem until I got the boat home and was cleaning it. The bottom of the hulls are pretty good. Thanks

I just fixed a large soft spot on my H18 deck. I also found another one on the other hull, though it is much smaller.

The delam is not very deep. As Matt has said before it is like gluing 2 pieces of paper togeather. WIthout the glue the papers are very flexible. When you add the glue it is more stiff than the 2 papers combined. This is because the glue picks up the shear stress. Glue is very strong under shear loads.

Anyway I used 1.5 of the small Git Rot packages to fix my soft spot. It takes alot less than you think it would. Git Rot is nice because the filler is already added and you don't need to buy the resin, the hardener, the filler, and the applicator all separately. Plus the consistancy is perfect.

If you follow the FAQ about this repair you should have it complete in less than an hour. Buy one more package of Git Rot than you think you need. If you have to run to the store in the middle of the process you risk having it cure before you can get the remaining epoxy into the delam. You can always return the extra if you have any.
