Hi all
The bottom rudder gudgeon on my hobie 16 broke, followed by the top gudgeon breaking, pulling out of of the gudgeon screws from the hull. I was on a down wind run with a long distance to travel before could beach the boat. I sailed in on one rudder, with the departed rudder and cross bar trailing behind the boat.
A few questions:
Is there a back plate which the gudgeon screws go into?
I would like to avoid cutting a hole in the hull to put a back plate or other material in place for the gudgeon screw. I was thinking of drilling the current screw hole to a larger diameter, putting a stainless steel stud with a 90 degree bend into the hull and using epoxy to hold in place. The stud would be machine threaded. I would use a nut fastened to the stud to hold the gudgeon in place.
I know that I am not the first hobie owner to face this issue. Ideas?
thanks. Shane
