Post subject:  Cleaning mold spots off sails (and cleaning sails in gen.)

Just bought some used sails, generally in medium-ish condition, but have lines and spots of mold on them. How should I clean the mold off the sails? How should sails be cleaned, in general.

Also - there are some worn-through areas along the battens. What is the best way to patch these? With sail tape?

Thanks.

i used to do boat detailing and used clorox bleach and water 50/50. let sit for 5 minutes and the hose off with water.works great on interiors and fabrics.not sure on what it would do to sails or stitching.

Do not use bleach on the sails, will eat the stiching. Try vinegar/water, non bleach marine mildew remover. Be careful with brushing, takes of fabric coating removing crispness.

thank You HOBIE911.I was not really for sure about the bleach/water on the sails.Called my father on this question after i posted my reply and he said he used vinegar and water as well.in fact he said the same exact words you used. That it would "eat the stitching".

MILDREW/MOLD
Nylon, Eclipse (common sail cover material), Mylar, Sail Covers: Make a paste using an enzyme presoak and water. Scrub particularly bad areas. Then soak entire sail in water and enzyme presoak until mildew lightens. (kills the spores)
Wash with a detergent. DO NOT USE BLEACH
Enzyme Presoak Eco-Wash at Home Depot. $14.95
Detergent w/enzyme Tide. Do not use Tide with BLEACH

I sell a new breed of EPA registered products. One kills mold on sails and the other is a bonding agent. It bonds to the sails and stops mold from growing for 1 - 3 years per application. It is also EPA registered for use on any textile, porous and non porous surfaces. Email me at [email protected] and I will email you the info. Both products are non toxic, chemically stable, and contain no bleach.
