Removing Paint from hulls

G'Day, I've bought my first Hobie, a 14 footer, to sail with my kids. although I've been doing some of my own repairs (it is quite old) I'm stuck for a way to remove some old very rough paint that a previous owner has put on the bottom 4" of the hull. I want the hull to be as smooth as possible. Any advice???

I don't have any direct experience, but gelcoat on boats is nothing new. Many boats have bottom paint installed and removing it from a Hobie Cat would be the same. Check with a marine suppy and service center. They should be able to help.

Sand, sand, sand, I have the rendom orbital makita palm sander. Lot's of work but it came out nice. I've never worked with chemical stripper and I would assume it will work but I've heard the stuff is really nasty to work with. Good luck.

I repainted a hobie years ago with 2 part paint. I just sanded it, I had heard that the chemical stripper can get into the glass and cause problems down the line. Just sand wipe down well use the primer recommened and the 2 part paint is great.
