| Post subject: | deciding on replacing standing rigging |
hi This week I had a trapeze cable break off at the handle, just in my hand before I put my weight on it. Scary. It made me wonder if I shouldn't replace all the standing rigging. Is there a way to test/inspect the rigging to decide if the time is right? What should I look at? I don't know the age of the standing rigging or the trapeze rigging. 1981 H16. The boat lives on the beach now and we sail in salt water. thanks a ton frank |

I would say that is one part failed that bad, I would just take the plunge and replace it all. It's not that expensive overall if you only do it every 5-7 years and it helps to keep you from getting craked in the head by your mast and some unintentional paddling. You can get a magnifying glass and check the calbe ends next to the cripms and look for cracks and stress fratures but even then you might not be able to see anything. Play it safe and re-rig. |

for peace of mind replace all the rigging check all the rivets check mast for leaks in a swimming pool maybe upsize the standing rigging one wire size even check the chain plates I have seen these get little cracks. Keep the old standing rigging in the Hobie hell box for emergencies FYI I did sell my Hobie 16 20 years ago bought a 21SE which is a great and all powerfull ship however I really miss my 16 and hope to add one to my current fleet soon for solo sails or busting surf and waves |

Thanks Milli and Gary. I'm going to replace the standing rigging and the shroud chain plates. Gary, I have a mast float, so do I need to test the floatation of my mast? I just replaced my mast base and saw the foam inside the mast, but I'm sure the mast isn't water tight. Does it need to be? thanks again frank |

The use of any mast float is the captains choice I have never used one or really ever needed one NO WATER SHOULD EVER GET IN YOUR MAST NEVER LOOK UP SOME REPAIR TOPICS OR BETTER YET ASK HOBIE MATT ALWAYS USE RIVETS AND FASTENERS PROVIDED BY A HOBIE DEALER AFTER REPAIR CHECK FOR LEAKS IN THE POOL SINK THE MAST TO THE BOTTOM |

The mast should be OK if using a float, but better if sealed. The float may still allow some of the upper end to dip under water in some conditions. This can lead to righting issues if you get water / weight in there. |
