I applied some penetrol to my annodized aluminum and it looks pretty good. However, what I'm left with is a sort of sticky coating that's attracting grit.

Since it's not intended to be used this way, what do you do with it after you apply it and it dries? Buff it?

I think its supposed to be a wipe on/wipe off kinda thing. You may have left too much on. Try a solvent Paint thinner to remove any excess.

That's why anyone that's used that stuff before, doesn't do it again... and it yellows gelcoat. I would try to get it off with some solvent.

Interesting. I saw it posted enough times that I thought I'd try it.

What do you recommend instead Jeremy?

I try to get the threads that offer up bad advice before they go viral, and I missed a few penetrol threads. Sorry. I have done everything the wrong way on these boats over the years, and have wasted all the money that one would ever need to waste on a fun hobby.
For the xbars I don't recommend anything. If you want them to look new, there's only one way... Get new ones. I've heard of re anodizing, but have never done it. Why though? It would cost $$, take mass work and time, and you'd still end up with a 1980 (?) Hobie 16.

My advice is to sail it as much as possible. Use the money and timespent to go out to the lake with the family.Sail.
Keep the boat hosed off. Wax the hulls. Keep it covered. Buy a new(er) boat down the line.
Of course in the meantime, maintain your boat with the necessary gear to make it safe.the best upgrade for an old boat that's mechanically sound is to put a new suit of sails on her. They can be transferred to a newer boat down the line.

Amen, Brother Jeremy!

Hear that, everyone? Want to make your old, faded boat look good? Then put down the brushes, paint, etc. Instead, raise your sails, put your wife, girlfriend, child, dog or whatever on the tramp with you, and get that thing on the water! They all look good there!

I have been using penetrol on every piece of black anodized my 18 mag has since new in 1989. It looks like the day it left the dealer except for a few scratches. I re coat it every year. Use a lint free rag, very impartant, I use surgical towells, apply very thin even coat and let dry 24 hrs. A second coat will get rid of any streaking that might occur. Again 20+ years of use I swear by the stuff. So do all my buddies at the beach. This is my expierence anyway! Try Lime Away for removal. Over the years the penetrol has built up and flaked a little, Lime Away worked for me to remove and start bare again.

Thanks HOBIE 911.

What about the stickiness? Did I put too much on? I went pretty easy, or so I thought, just testing it out on the mast a little.

Sounds like you may have applied too much. Strip off with Lime away and start anew. Like I said, I have been using Penetrol for over 20 yrs with excellent results. Apply a thin coat, a second coat can be applied to even out coverage. I live in Florida, bright sun, it takes a good day to dry. Do it in am, no rain as rain or dew will leave water permanent water spots.

Agree with the thought that we should just sail, but I did use Penetrol and it worked great. Black parts shine. Dried quick.
