I have a Hobie 16 that has been damaged by another boat falling on top of it while on the beach. The front cross member that supports the mast cracked during the impact. A welder says if it is aluminum he can do the repair. Can someone tell me if it is aluminum and not magnesium and if so what grade aluminum. The welder needs to know if it is 5,000, 6,000, or 8,000 series so he knows what type of rod to use.

6061 T6 hardness.

I'd say no to the welding. Too much stress, twist etc. Welds seem to crack in areas near the welds.

If you do have it welded, I would suggest a gusset or re-enforcing patch on topof the weld. That is a pretty high stress area that cracked.

Don't weld that unless you send it out for heat treat afterward. The T6 is it's hardness heat treat process. If you weld it, it will aneal the aluminum in that area (soften). After all that, it would be better and cheaper to just get another one
