Post subject:  I saw the light

I was cleaning my boat yesterday and I look through the ports on the deck and I noticed that I could see light coming through the bottom. Just like a 2 inch wide strip. It does not feel soft but I think that I have cause for alarm.

My question is this. What do you folks think is the best way to deal with this? I would rather not patch on the bottom on the outside for cosmetic and smoothness reasons.

However, my arms are pretty beefy so I don't think that reaching inside will allow me to move like I want/ get the patches far enough up the bow. My arms can fit in the port but I am afraid I might epoxy all my fingers together.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds to me like you are seeing where gelcoat is rubbed off. If this is the case then there is no cause for alarm. The gelcoat is relatively thin compared the the amount of fiberglass that backs it up. You may be due for a bottom job, though that is hard to say without seeing it. I do not think that you need to make any repairs from the inside out.

Later,
Dan

I agree with Dan, you probably just need a fresh coat of gel. The bare fiberglass will allow water to seep into the core material, so put a coat of gel on sooner than later. View my other posts reguarding epoxy vs. polyester... Good luck.
