Post subject:  How do you get black gel coat?

One time I wanted to paint my rudder blades black with gel coat so I bought my gel coat and 3 tubes of black die. I mixed up half a quart of gel coat and added all my tubes and all I got was a medium gray. I started with white gel coat.
I feel if I keep adding black gel coat die it will eventually be too much die and make the gel coat weak or something. It would take like 15 tubes or more for a nice deep black. I want my center boards black, I recently saw some photos of a 18 with black boards and I fell in love.

So is there an easier way to get black gel coat?

Perhaps use graphite powder....like we use with epoxy to refinish EPO rudders? Doesn't take much for that mixture to turn BLACK.

You need to buy neutral gel coat with black tint. It is very black.. http://www.uscomposites.com/polyesters.html
I buy my Gel here. They are very reasonable with pricing and shipping. And their tech. staff will answer any questions you might have.

Thanks a lot for the photo you jerk. I had to get a mop to soak up all the drool on the floor.

Jesus that looks nice, I like the decks. I would never sail it, just look at it.
It must be hard keeping it looking that nice, garage only.

Wow - that's one Bad-A$$ looking H18. What do the Sails look like?

I assume that like a black car, nothing looks better when its clean and nothing gets dirty quicker. Water spots would be hell (as would bright sunshine - ouch!)

it is going to be hard to keep it looking that good I'm sure. this will be the first summer being black. It was PAINTED yellow before so just about anything i did was going to be an improvement!

The sails are Black custom Hobie sails.

That's a 17, Jeff. Dead giveaway are the wing tube holes and no daggerboard slots. The tramp doesn't wrap around the front crossbar like the 18 does, either.

Oops. Stand corrected! Amazing how similar they are. Now I can also see some differences in the bow (rake), mast ball mount, rear cross-beam ends, etc. Perhaps its my imagination, but the placement of the front beam seems further back as well. Regardless, it looks sharp!

Background reminds me of growing up in Illinois. Nothing like getting an inch of snow with 40+mph wind filling my yard with 6-foot deep brownish snowdrifts!
