Finally...going to drill a set of EPOII's for my '84 H16 race boat. I'm hesitant to use the Hobie template, as it seems (unless built from AL plate, per MBounds winter '10 Hotline) it may be difficult to line up properly. I've put the original ('84) lexan rudders on to measure the rake (at 12") and found an acceptable rake. With the uppercasting/tiller arm unbolted, I then locked the cam to test fit the upper and found, with everything snug, the upper hole would need to be re-drilled about half a diameter forward. (this makes sense as in light air the boat handles pretty well, and as the wind builds, so does weather helm, and then lost flow) My thoughts are to use this (lexan rudder) as a jig for the forward hole, and drill the aft/upper hole in the EPOII's by the same method. But...I have access to 2005, standard issue, fiberglass, rudders to borrow for a jig to start. Would you (if it was your hard earned money) use the original lexan or the 2005 rudder for a jig? If using the '05 I of course would re-fit and measure the rudder rake before commiting. |

'05. The Lexan rudders are slightly smaller than the EPOs (shrinkage from the molding process). Tough to get them lined up perfectly with the new rudders. Even if you make a mistake - fill the holes and re-do them. |
