Post subject:  Rivet Tool

I recently bought an early 80's H18 that I am renovating. I would love to be able to install rivets myself, but understand that the common rivet tool that I have is not beefy enough to install most of the rivets on the boat. What kind of tool would I need and where can it be bought?

A pop rivet gun will be good enough for everything except for mast hound and hook mounting. I'm sure you can ask a clerk at Home Depot or equivalent hardware superstore where you can find a pneumatic rivet gun for these applications.

Post subject:  in response to your riveting question

I recently replaced the mast base rivets on my Hobie 16. I used Home Depot's heavy duty riveter.it was a real PIA job. I found a long handle rivet gun on Harbor tool.com for $30.00. I plan to add it to my bag of tricks.

Post subject:  Rivet Tool - Problems with Stainless Steel Rivets

Who has successfully mounted the large mast float???

I just bought the large mast float for my '83 H16. The kit contains rivets which turned out to be too tough for the beefiest rivet tool I could get at my local Home Depot (Arrow Model RHT300, just under 20 bucks, not recommended for stainless steel - I guess, the folks at Hobie packed stainless steel for this job!!). Boat already on the beach, mast drilled, rivets in, but not tight and tool gives up its ghost. Great!!! Does anyone know an affordable manual tool (I found some, e.g. http://oemproamtools.com/poprivet.htm for Cnd$ 155.00 !!!) that can handle stainless steel rivets?? Or would aluminum rivets be strong enough??
Any input appreciated!!

Wolfgang.
