Are all Hobie mast size the same size? Specifically the diameter of the mast. I hava a Hobie 17 and cannot find a replacement. I can however find plenty of 16 and 18 masts. I was thinking I could cut a 16 or 18 to the same length as a 17 and mount the hardware from my old 17 mast.

Opinions?

Thanks,
Kevin C

If you mean the same extrusion, no.

I belive the 17 and 18 share the same extrusion, though. Problem with cutting down an 18 mast is that you have all the rivet holes from the spreader / diamond wire fittings.

Where are you located?

Well, there's Florida and then there's Florida. Key West is nearly as far from you as I am in Michigan.

I don't have a mast, but you should be able to track one down in that part of the world.

Since you live in Destin, you should check with Kirk at Key Sailing in P'cola or Brad at Sunjammers in Panama City to see if they have a used mast section.

thanks. :)

So do you think the 18 mast will work decently enough?

I don't know for sure if they are the same section. A dealer would know.

You'd have to change over the end casting, cut a new sail slot (down low) and remove all the 18 fittings (which will leave a lot of holes).

The 17 has a different Comptip, too.

I think you'd be better off finding a used 17 mast.

Yep, the USA product extrusion-section shapes are all different.

H14, Wave

H16

H Getaway

H17, 20

H18

H21, 21SC

So, the shape/fit of base castings and heads differ.

Update...

I am offering a $50 finders fee if you can locate me a Hobie 17 mast that I end up purchasing. I will pay you via paypal or check.

I have tried everything and I am having no luck.

Thats the downside to these Hobies. They seem to last forever making used parts sometimes hard to come by. I am looking for a Tiger mast myself for my SX as the comptip does alot of flexing with the squaretop added to it. Can't find one of those either.
