I have a beach cat company here on St John and we are trying to make a chase boat. We are using two Getaway hulls. Crossbars for these hulls would run over a thousand dollars with shipping so we are trying to come up with an alternative.

We found that two H16 pylons fit in the aft crossbar cutouts, but only protrude by about 6 inches. We found a H16 side bar that fits in the bow spreader cut outs but is too short to span the distance between the two hulls. We have nothing that fits in the large, odd shaped cut out for the forward crossbar.

I imagine sheets of epoxy coated ply wood bolted to the decks and through the short pylons and sections of cross bar we've inserted into the cut outs? But it would take two sheets of ply and the whole contraption would be extremely weak and flexible.

Perhaps we could use aluminum tubes and weld them to the short extrusions sticking out of the hulls? The boat also must have a transom that can support either a 9 or 15 hp outboard.

Does any one have any ideas on how to make a solid power boat out of the two hulls?

An Hobie 14 Mast? I think it is the same size as the pylons.

Ron Lane the dealer in San Diego made a powerboat out of an old broken up cat. He swapped the port and starboard hulls to place the repaired jetty damage on the inside, under the wood platform he built. The motor was in the middle of the front cross bar, tiller grip used only to power the boat, locked centerline. He hooked up a wheel to the tiller crossbar with a standard cable. The boat had a center seat like riding a motor cycle. He eventually cut the rudders down substantially to give the boat a few extra knots.

Hi, Han, Your post is a few months old so I
don't know if you came up with a solution,
last time I was in St. Thomas, the guy at the
rental place by Redhook had done something
similar with H17? I think, was a while ago. the
thing about the Getaway is the tramp holds it
altogether, except fo two bolts in forward cross
beam, and the shape of middle beam. I looked
at your web site and saw you attended Bard, I
went there for a year and enjoyed it, in 1970.
If we make it back to the islands, I'll get in touch,
st. John is beautiful, good luck, doug
