Hi,

I'am looking at replacing both the main sheat and jib ropes on my Getaway. Searching the web I came across the following vendor link with some good descriptions of the different types of sailing rope:

http://www.sailingsupply.com/catalog/ri ... _rope.html

The MFP Cover / Composite AmSteel Fiber Core sounds like a good replacement.

Any recommendations, should I replace with like length, I typically find myself with a couple of yards at my feet most of the time; or due to the low stretch on this type of rope should go with a couple of extra feet?

Thanks
Steve

The mainsheet is 38 feet. Jib is 32.

The mainsheet is also the traveler, so... sheet all the way out, travel all the way out and sit forward. If that is too much... shorten it.

The stuff looks cool but really pricey. You can replace with stock stuff from any Hobie dealer for $0.98 per foot for the main and $0.78 per foot for the jib sheets.

Thanks Brad,

I think cost wise it's a draw if I replace like with like. Their 3/8th and 7/16th double braided (Trophy line) with 3,000lb and 4,000 lb strength are about the same at $.75 and $.95 per foot; and I'd rather support my local dealer.

A MFP with a composite AmSteel Fiber Core would allow me to run a smaller diameter lighter rope with same or greater strength, that doesn't absorb water but without that nice soft feel.

I haven't had much exposure to these newer ropes are they worth the extra cost?

I visited my local hobie dealer to check out their rope during the week.

They had a couple of recommendations but mentioned that given the Getaways small sail area I would be in little danger of breaking any of the rope.

Ok so here I am back home pulling out my old Physics books, .

SL=SAx(VxV)x0.00431

Our sail area is 180 sq ft, so for example the force in a 25kt with gusts to 38kt is 480 lbs - 1120 lbs split between main sail and the jib.

This looks a little on the low side?
