I just bought a new getaway. The bob is voluminous, which I trust will be a good thing if she goes over. it is also heavy. and while trailering, causes the mast to oscillate with small bumps in the road. Is the oscillation anything to worry about (ie: are the cases of fatigue cracks in the bob/mast attachment / damage to mast)?

Personally, I would try to eliminate the bouncing as much as possible. Can you slide the mast down a bit to prevent the mast from flexing as much? If not there are only 4 screws in the bob. Remove it for the trip maybe.

BTW... congrats on purchasing a great boat!

I'd recommend removing it while on the trailer on long distances.

Also, there have been several reports of Bobs loosening under sail, so check them regularly.

Bouncing?

Add a line over the mast at the mid point and tension it to "pre-load" bend the mast. It would then be rigid and not bounce.

thanks all.

I found that positioning the mast so that the bob is only a few feet away from its resting point on the aft cross bar pretty much eliminates the harmonic motion we experienced.
