Matt,
I love my Getaway, but, on windy days (above 12) I get tremendous weather helm. Has been like this since I bought the boat new in 2007. Took it in stride at first, then with experience started getting really frustrated. I have tried all manner of raking mast with basically no change in helm. Other changes, but not in helm. Problem is worse on starboard tack. If wind is above 15, tiller pull is akin to lifting weights! Problem is such, that I've considered selling.
I recently came across some threads where you addressed this Matt, and you talked about some rudder defects or issues.
Would this be for the 2007 model year by chance?
If so, how to resolve this? Would warranty still apply? Are rudders the issue?
I'm reluctent to shim the rudders.
Help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
M

The symptom of a rudder problem on a Getaway or a Wave is a heavy weather helm on one tack and lee helm on the opposite tack. This is due to an asymmetrical shape of the rudder blades. One side is sunken-in when the plastic cooled. You can see this by placing a straight edge along the sides of the blades. You should see a hollow on one side that is deeper than the opposing side of the same blade.

If this is present and you are the original owner, we could consider a free replacement set of blades. You would have to file a warranty claim with an authorized Hobie dealer. If you are a second owner... we can consider a highly reduced cost for replacement blades.

Thanks Matt,
I'll check the blades with a straight edge before asking anymore questions. Although one tack is worse than the other, neither produces Lee helm, so I'm still wondering?
I'll get to the boat early next week and post back.
Thanks,
MJ
