Can't wait to get out agani this year (at least until I see the Long Island Sound water Temp.) I am considering a shortie wet suit but was wondering how much protection it will be. As the weather warms I think a full wet suit or dry suit would be way too warm. Any thoughts?

Thanks

Hi,

I find wetsuit booties with soles on the bottom great except in the warmest weather. My feet get the wetest and cold, also the soles make things more confortable.

More is better but I find these to be the minimal.

I sailed for a few years off the cost of Marblehead, MA. Water temps would get near 60 in August as a high. I had a shorty wetsuit I used from June-Sept. If it was really windy and cool I would cover this with an old rain jacket to break the wind. I bought my shorty for about $50. I wish I had a farmer john with a jacket for those warmer days.

I looked at sailing from the viewpoint of I am going to be wet so I need a wetsuit. I now wish I had a good drysuit I could wear to extend the season. I rarly capsize accidentally (now) and I would like the option to wear warmer clothing in the early and late parts of the sailing season. Now that I live in MD I could probably sail year round without much worry with a good drysuit.

Now that I have shared my opinions, here are a few things I noticed about the wetsuit I wore:

1) Unless they are wet, they are VERY uncomfortable

2) They do not block the wind as well as you might think.

3) Wear cheap pair of water shorts over them to keep the seat from wearing out.

Craig:

I would try this. They don't charge you extra for the relief zipper also. The are suppose to be a little more comfortable that a standard drysuit.

Aside from the price, I am concerned about the heat. I rarely get that wet sailing, our season has many 75 to 85 degree days in early spring into summer while water temps are in the low 50's. I want protection if I do go for a swim but don't want to bake on the boat.

Thanks, Craig

Craig:

I would try shorty with a Gul $90 spraysuit over it and some water socks and Ronstan racing boots. That is what Iam going to try. Doesn't get that cold here in Texas.
