I have searched the forums and have found a lot of useful information on comp tip problems and repair. I have a slightly different question then what has already been discussed.

I just purchased my getaway (and loving life). I have spots on my comp tip that are cracking...horizontally. It appears that the prior owner may have damaged it in the Handling/storage as they do not appear to be stress related ( my assumption given they are horizontal and prior post on the subject).

When I look into the mast thru the crack there appears to be a solid core. Does anyone know if the black outside is just a shell and therefore most of the support is provided for by the core versus the black shell. Is the black shell just a protective covering or does it provide something in the support structure.

Thanks for any and all help.

Yes, the outer black material is just cosmetic putty. Some vintages seem more prone to crazing (cracks).
