how does the getaway sail under jib alone and is this even practical?

It works! It's not ideal but I've done it when the wind is from the right direction for sailing up to the boat launch at the end of the day. The main takes too much time to take down and manage by myself to get back to the dock plus it can easily be too much sail that close to the dock. I can take down the main a 100 yards or so from the dock then open up the jib to take it in the rest of the way. Then when I'm maybe 50ft from the dock I can quickly furl the jib and momentum takes me in the rest of the way. Power boaters watching are always amazed.

thanks! i was wondering if it would be an effective means of depowering the boat if you were to get caught out in a big blow. anyone have experience with that, or is it enough to just dowse the jib when things get dicey.

Downwind maybe... You can't sail to weather on Jib alone and you certainly can't tack.
