Post subject:  Getaway with wings and traps...not very easy to hike out

never used a trap before (and still haven't) so i brought my harness last time out and let my 5yr old son hook in to trap/have fun (yes cat was beached and unrigged) while i was busy with other stuff.
i have seen Getaway images/vids with traps running outside and also inside wings. i ran my traps on out side of wings forward of shrouds.
Question(s)...it was kinda of a chore to get my son hooked in due to the wings being in the way. then i decided to try the trap (on the beach still) and...yep... a real PIA.
i guess either simply use(sit) on the wings instead of hiking out and remove traps altogether OR....remove wings then use traps.
opinions??..please.
Paul

While Hobie advises against traping off the wings, I do. That's me on the trap on my friend's Getaway.

Have to take up all the slack in the adjustment rope for the dogbone. Be careful on the way in, sometimes it's a rough landing.

i must have have been arse-backwards on my reconning...nope...now i'm just plain confused....
i think i had the dogbones out as far as possible to the end of the lines which placed my/son's butts not much higher (off water level) than level with tops of hulls.
iirc the bogbones were at right close to the bottom of trap handles.
if i adjusted the lines/stoppers so that the dogbones hang a foot or so below the handles i think i'm riding even lower though.
maybe the trap lines were for an H16 or something with longer mast?
try again next time.
i bought the boat used with wings and traps.

We have the dogbone an inch from the trap wire right by the handle.

This is how mine is set also. You want it as short as possible since you are trapping off the wings with puts your body in a higher position above the water. It is a little awkward with the wings but awesome none the less. My trap wire and bungy run slightly aft of the shrouds and inside the wings. I can imagine how dificult it would be to hook in if they were run outside the wings. I find it easiest to hook in, then step over the wings and trap off the hull first, then step up to the wing.

It's a lot easier and comfortable to trap without the wings in my opinion. I usually keep the wings in the garage and just use the trapeze. I put the wings on in special ocassions (when taking a bunch of people out)

yep that's what i did. dogbone close to handle and line stopper close to handle on other side ( i do not have the micro block though).
as short as i can get the trap line my butt/waist is pretty much level with the top of the hulls when i am at full streched out legs. i am wondering if this trap kit was for an H16.
no biggie...i have a Race (professionally modded/rebuilt) SeaSpray to try and learn before my 'family jewels' turn literally into ice. (northwest Canada).
Thanks,
Paul

When not trapping, the dogbone is higher than the wing. When sitting on the wing, I have to raise my but a few millimetres to hook on.

It's possible you have longer trap lines.

Shorten the trap wires so that the dogbone is in the middle of the adjustable range. Cut of the swagging at the top and re swag. This results in about a one foot reduction. This lets people of various sizes hook in while seated on the bench and then puts them at a more pleasant angle while out on the wire.

I used to trap off the wings on my 17. Yep, it's scary, but it'll hold the boat down in anything less than a hurricane!
Haven't trapped out on the Getaway, bought the trap line mostly for the grand kids, since I'm older, slower and more clumsy now. But dayum, trapping out is serious fun!
