Post subject:  Upgrade to newer cooler lids?

Good evening, folks!

I have a 2002 Getaway with the old round cooler lids. Having never been a fan of them (opening and closing them area PITA (and I never fully trust them to hold if I were to Thomas Crown the boat), I've been wanting to upgrade to the newer hinged rectangular lids. Is this a straight-across swap? (unscrew the old cooler covers, and screw on the new)? Or is it not a one to one swap?

Thanks!

Now you can bypass that one for the latest thing. We now have the rectangular Twist and Seal hatches 100% better! and... white too. Better seal, better strength, captive lid.

71717001 Rectangular Hatch White
71707002 (x 2) Gasket
8032121 Screw (x 14)

Can you post pictures of the new cooler lids on the 2012 boat?

It's the same lid that comes standard on Pro angler fishing kayaks - White or Black are available ( link: http://www.hobiecat.com/mirage/mirage-pro-angler-12/ )

Thanks, guys! So this is a bolt-on replacement, then? Or will any cutting of the hull be required to fit the new lid?

Is this the same lid as on my 2006 Getaway or is this an improvement on it?

It is not the same lid as on the 2006 Getaway - it's new since last year and it's only been on the Pro angler kayaks to this pont - it will become standard equipment on Getaway's I believe (if it already hasn't switch over already, need to confirm)

I have some questions on the new cooler lids also, some of which have been asked, but not yet answered. I have a Getaway, purchased June, 2012. I keep it at a summer home on a small lake in Maine, while my permanent home is in Georgia. I am not able to run out to my backyard and refresh my memory as to how the cooler lids are installed. How are the new cooler lids installed? For example, what tools, materials, and skills are required, as well as a time estimate. Does the hull material require a specific type of caulk to seal and adhere well? My option is to have the lids installed by the person who has been storing the boat over the winter. Also, how much do 2 cooler lids cost, with an estimate if available of shipping cost and lead time required. Finally, in what ways are these lids better than the lids on my 2012 Getaway? Are they really that much more water resistant, and are there any disadvantages? I am a relatively inexperienced catamaran sailor, although I did own a Trac 16 for a year or two about twenty five years ago.

Thanks for any advice
Dan

Dan-those are round lids they used on the older model Getaways, not the square ones on yours.
I've got a 2012 Getaway too, and the square lids leak when they get really doused. No big deal, since anything I put in the bin is in a dry bag if I want it to stay dry.

Yes,I thought that my leaky lids might stay leaky. So, just to verify, these new lids will not fit my June 2012 Getaway? Or, do I actually have the new lids already? Please remember, I haven't seen my boat for a year, and it is more than 1000 miles away. I seem to remember that the lids are rectangular. Has anyone found a way to make the lids on a 2012 Getaway less leaky? Under most conditions they stay pretty dry, and I do keep my things in drybags, but I'm always interested in improvement. I installed round ports (with screw down lids ) with net bags in the hulls of my Trac-16. These seemed to work vey well, but I don't know if they can be installed on the somewhat flexible rotomolded hulls of the Getaway, vs the semi rigid fiberglass hull on the Trac-16.

I'm really looking forward to the summer.

Thanks for the reply.

Nobody has this new hatch yet on their Getaway - we just got them

It's straight forward - you need to remove the old hatch and install this one.

Hatches are never water tight - these new ones are better, but not water proof either - that's why there's a drain in the hatch bottoms now.
Parts needed to do this per hull are:

71710001 White Hatch

71707002 Gasket (x2)

8032121 Screw (x14)

How would I get these; I don't see anywhere to order parts and I don't have a dealer near me. Does Hobie sell parts directly, or do I need to find a dealer that does mail order, or what?

Thanks,
Alec

Any Hobie dealer, sail or kayak has access to these. We do not sell direct.

Use our dealer finder to locate a dealer nearest you. Most will ship orders and all can have us ship direct (within their territory) "Drop Ship" to you for an additional fee.

I tried to order these from West Coast Sailing in Oregon, but they said that these part numbers are not in the Hobie system and they don't have any way to get the parts. Can you provide any info on how to order them, or what I should tell the dealer if I get a message like this?

Thanks,
Alec

These parts are all in the system... and the most recent (Spring / Summer) catalogs price list.
