Next weekend I hope to be sailing with a large number of passengers. How many can the boat safely hold? Where should they be positioned for light and high winds? I have wing seats and no traps. I may have several smaller lightweight (90 lb.?) 12 year old girls also. Can they go on the front tramp if they are willing? What about larger (135 lb) kids on the front tramp? Strategies for tacking a full boat in light and high winds? |

The most I have had on my Getaway was 4 adults about 800 pounds worth and 5 kids. The wind never got over 20 mph. The most worrisome aspect of sailing with this many people was the larger adults. They tended to shift weight slowly and didn't realize that they would have to move around on the boat depending on the tack and wind direction. I had to prepare them well in advance for a tack or jibe so they could slowly get in to a movable state. The kids where easy to deal with because they are lite and quick. My advice to to sail very long lines to reduce tacking. |

For example if you only have 4 adults, would you try and fit all 4 on the windward seats, or have 2 on each side, etc? |

Depends on wind speed and heading you are sailing. Basically... distribute weight to balance the boat. They will need to move depending on heading. Typically more aft as you sail downwind in breeze to keep the bow from digging in. More to the weather side when windy. In lighter air... distribute weight evenly. When tacking, it is easier to tack with weight more aft. If all are forward, the bows don't tack across the wind well. |
