Is the actual shroud wire wearing through, or is it the plastic covering that is wearing?

The end of the aluminum section of the mast should probably be rounded by the manufacture to eliminate this as an issue. The Getaway has been around for along time, long enough that this type of defect would have been reported in the past if it caused problems. Maybe this is an issue with newer boats i.e. 2009+ or newer.

If it is the extrusion edge cutting into the wire...

Is your CompTip properly glued into the extrusion? If fully seated and glued, the wire should not be able to contact an "edge".

This is not a product design defect, it could be workmanship here or at the dealership who assembled the boat if it is a sharp edge being exposed.

Solved...

I reviewed our own boat here. The Tip was not glued in and the material at the joint was chipped away. This leaves an exposed edge of aluminum. This mast extrusion end was pretty sharp and our wire covering was scrapped off.

Glue the CompTip into the mast extrusion. I would also round off the extrusion edge. We will start doing that here as a precaution, but gluing in the CompTip is the primary issue I believe.

Great response mmiller. Hobie is a great company and makes great products, keep it up.

A combination of a loose comp tip and sharp aluminium base is consistent with my problem. I needed to re-glue my mast tip in the second season right around the time I noticed the wear.

I have a 2006 and have never had issues with upper shroud wear. But I only use it 3 months on the year. That's all northern Saskatchewan will give us LOL. 7 more weeks till to launch.
