Post subject:  Getaway Sailing Video... Doctor's Lake, Jacksonville, FL

Here is a video we shot this past weekend sailing on doctor's lake. I just picked up a gopro hero 3 camera and mounted it just under the jib furler on the forward beam. Camera worked great, however I managed to loose the WiFi remote on day 1 when I was climbing back on board after flipping the boat... I had the remote on a lanyard necklace and the remote caught the edge of the boat and snapped off... now sitting on the bottom of the lake somewhere. I still feel pretty lucky... as you will see in the video, the wife and I flipped the boat and upon both of us climbing up onto the hull to get her righted, my wife looks down and finds my wedding band laying on the side of the hull, just seconds from being flipped into the lake. I guess my fingers were cold and the ring had slipped off my finger and landed on the hull we were standing on. Man am I lucky... I would have never lived that one down! Enjoy the video...

recent video of the boat in action on youtube...

P.S. the boat is for sale... see the classifieds section

Do you have the jib backwinded?

I apologize... I am a bit of a sailing novice... what do you mean by "do you have the jib backwinded"?

He means you are setting jib on the wrong side. Your jib should be set to the leeward side of the boat. :)

thanks for the tip... I wasn't sure what you meant at first and after watching a couple of other youtube videos of getaways sailing I realized our error... I am excited to get out this weekend and try running the jib the "right" way! Hopefully we will notice a performance difference and perhaps some easier tacking! Thanks for the tip.... always learning....

Thanks for the video.
The admiral going over in slow motion made me smile.

If needed, you can back wind the jib (leaving on the windward side) for a bit when tacking to help drag the bow around before releasing the cleat and sheeting it in on the leeward sida.

So just to clarify before we go give this new found knowledge a test run... When under way we should have the jib sheet cleated in on leeward side of the boat vs to the windward side as we were doing before? Then when tacking, leave the jib cleated on the leeward side until just past turning head into the wind, then swap cleats so you will resume jib cleaning on the leeward side? Hope I'm not mis using my limited sailing vocabulary... I usually just tell my wife to "grab that line and pull on it" or "move over to that side so we don't flip!"

I think you got it right.

There was some backwinding the jib when tacking posts recently on the getaway forum.

You should go possibly twice as fast !

I am surprised you were even able to tack at all with the jib on the wrong side.
And I think you should also be less prone to capsize, although I did enjoy your slow motion video of your crew sliding !
