Well, I've done the unthinkable...install backrests onto the back of my (new to me) Hobie Getaway's wing seats! And I've gotta admit, it looks like a factory-built job.

If someone can help explain to me how to post my pictures onto the forum, I would really appreciate it. Or, I can email the pictures to anyone that is interested; just provide me with your email address. Thanks guys.

Ok, hopefully the below link will show everyone the set-up that we came up with:

Cool !

My first though was, "how do they not twist off if someone heavy leans back" but then I saw the braces going down to the crossbars. Nice Work!

Also, now I have AC/DC stuck in my head. Not a bad thing though.

Absolutely Brilliant !!!!!!

Now, what did you do for a motor bracket and for the tiller extension?

Thanks !

Thanks.

As you can see, the backrests are welded onto the vertical support posts for the wing seats. So the backrests are cantilevered even past the wing seats, i.e. further over the water.

I then installed the cheata bracket and electric motor (not sure about the tiller extension; it came with the boat when I bought it). And the black/red boxes on the wing seats themselves are storage and battery compartments for the motor. It's a shame to bolt them into the seats, but it allows these storage boxes to remain dry.

Hobie should offer these backrests as a factory option. As long as I get a cut of the action for designing them, haha!

Pretty cool!

One thing I don't like about the (similar) back rest for the Wave it that you can't hike out very far. The backrest stops you from leaning all the way out as the boat tips. You are then stuck leaning in towards the tramp when really flying.

But for cruising comfort... perfect.

Are they actual (modified?) Wave backrests? Aluminium welding?

Yes, I used the Wave backrests as the starting point. We had to modify the length, and obviously do some aluminum welding. The custom work was a bit pricey, but the results look great.

The welder did a fantastic job. In case anyone wants to install backrests on their Getaway, I have his contact information. He is based out of MD, but travels up and down the East coast.

Absolutely brilliant! Now, make it so you can recline back and install a footrest! Possibly some armrests with cup holders (I know, I am getting a bit carried away!).
Nice job though, very creative.
