| Post subject: | Brittle in the cold? |
I know some plastics get brittle in the cold...how do the plastic parts (not just the hulls) do in the cold? Now by cold I mean Air temp about 45 degrees...water temp maybe 45. I'm thinking of going for a short EASY sail (with every piece of cold weather gear i own on) when I go home for thanksgiving break...Now im coming home to Rhode Island from Savannah, GA where its nice and warm so I doubt I'll get up the courage to even go outside!

Marc- where do you live where 45 degrees counts as "cold" ? I am not sure how cold the poly needs to get to get brittle, but once the temperature gets up to 45 around here - the bathing suits come out
I imagine you have to get down into the 0 degrees to be concerned (that's when we start wearing sweaters  )

Whew! So I can safely assume that our wintertime low of around 65 degrees wont necessitate me worrying about brittle plastic... |

i'll be sailing sunday on the eastern end of long island, water around 50, air about the same with some windchill.....no worries, throw on the wetsuit, booties, this is just incase of a tip over!.....(i surf all winter too) |

Our kayaks are poly and we kayak all winter, in temps that may fall well below 0, in water that is deadly cold - I mean refreshingly cold 
And when it snows, yaks make great sleds !

well im from Rhode Island...HOWEVER I now go to college in Savannah, GA its November 11 and its still 80 degrees here! SO well im not so used to the cold anymore....i guess the average winter day in RI (febuary) is about 25-35 degrees....ill be home from Thanksgiving-new years...so it'll be slightly wamrer...but like i said being used to 80 degrees 45 is going to be COOOOOLLLD!!! I wish my parents let me bring the getaway down here for the winter...dad hasnt used it once since i left!!! however i've got nowhere to put it really at my apartment. |

I live on a lake in SE Wisconsin and kayak daily from the time the ice melts until the lake is almost frozen over. There have been no problems with the hull or mirage drive in frigid/freezing water. As the water freezes the hull and ice make a neat tinkling sound. |

Was out yesterday exploring for some reported old pirate caves near where we are building a home. Theres some photos being put up on http://profile.imageshack.us/user/pollywood if anyone is interested in that kinda stuff. This country is pretty desolate terrain wise, but the water....Oh,the water... |
