The parts catalog shows the forestay swivel being attached directly to the bow shackle to the mast; the assembly manual shows a pigtail that goes in between the swivel and the bow shackle. Did the assembly change or am I missing a pigtail (since I don't have one).

There was a change many years ago to what you are seeing... no pigtail. The addendum to the catalog shows the shackle to main tang shackle connection.

Thanks. In the new illustration it shows two bow shackles. Are both really necessary? You could just pin the forestay to the bow shackle pin and leave the two shrouds on the bow part of the bow shackle.

Pinning the forestay with the main shackle pin to swivel would not allow necessary rotation / articulating between the parts when the mast rotates. In addition... the pin is much larger on the main shackle; 5/16 vs 1/4 hole in the swivel.

a sixteenth isn't much in terms of tensile strength, with the 1/4 shackle in the line anyway, you are looking at failure at the same time unless you are worried about stress from the side shrouds. a 'much' larger shackle would be 7/16 which is the hole size on the tang. Besides, if you look at the Hobie Parts catalog, both shackles show the same part number 20700001. Now, I "get" the articulation aspect since the top swivel has to swivel properly or your jib won't furl/unfurl when you want it to.
