I believe it is yet another high-performance feature of your Hobie.

The teardrop-shaped rotating mast provides an aerodynamically consistant leading edge and angle of attack to the aparent wind, tapering off somewhat seamlessly into the sail. This allows unimpeded air flow along the lifting (outside) surface of the mast/sail combination.

On a reach your old monoclunker's leading edge presented the side of the mast to wind, and then a loss of lifting area where the wind broke away from the mast before joining up again with the outside sail surface.

At least that's what I tell my kids and they seem to believe me.
