The Hobie Wave has hull design features and geometry that make it unusually fast in high wind conditions. The most interesting is a near total lack of 'rocker'. The fastest recorded speed I've experienced is 18.28 mph (15.88kts). However, there have been times when not recording that seemed much faster. Once, in a downwind run in wind about 35, the boatspeed reached sufficient velocity to become like a sled, skipping the tops of the 3' wind chop. The boat simply was taking advantage of the surface tension of the water. It was unnerving because it seemed impossible. I would estimate the boat was travelling over 20. I hope to record the speed sometime in like conditions.

It looks like good Hobie day! :) What wind speed did you have that day?

Here's a short video of my Hobie Wave doing 16mph. This was a Stock Hobie wave, in ideal conditions. Wind came and left quickly. At the end of the video you can see the wind report. Because the wind was not sustained, the water chop was not too bad. Unfortunately, I only had one camera angle and no fancy gps graphics, just my Garmin Quatix watch.

Note: According to Precision Sails Video they got a Hobie Wave up to 22mph using a custom sail. (FYI: Sail had 7 battens and therefore would not be race legal)

Nice video, thanks for sharing. I use a Garmin Virb camera and it has the fancy graphics. I was thinking of buying a Garmin GPS watch and found the Virb for $90 shipped. I could not pass it up.

New speed record for me: 2 People on board, 18 MPH, winds between 20 & 30 MPH. I am not sure the boat can go much faster...... Prove me wrong before I hit 19 MPH. I need to work on my camera mount as it jiggles too much and makes an awful racket, the rudders can also be heard "humming". Sorry for the poor video editing; I'd rather sail than edit video.

Nicely done!! Conditions looked great. Well documented. Beating 18mph is now the goal and the answer to "how fast is the Wave" Amazing for such a tough little boat. Was the speedometer on the video a feature of your garmin, or were you able to add it with software?

I bought the camera from GPScity.com. It's a refurbished unit. $90 shipped. The gps and graphics are part of the virb and associated software.
I don't think I could have hit 18mph without my crew as the boat would heel over too much in those winds. These are great little boats. I can't believe that I am the only one out on the water. Come-on SF Bay Area wave owners get out sailing.
I even towed a kite boarded back to shore last week. He had line issues, so I tossed his foiling board on my deck and towed him and his kite behind the boat. Good times.

18.8mph according to the GPS before the bridle snap and I was dismasted.
Wind speed was around 17mph gusting to 30. This was earlier today at the north skyway rest area (Tampa Bay).
Two on board, around 180lbs each. Almost got the windward hull airborne but not quite. I was amazed how the boat was slamming through the waves, sheets of water crashing over the hulls and tramp.
Later examination showed both cables corroded. Guess I need to replace them too.
Hopefully I will get some pictures posted here later but I am way too tired (from paddling back in) to do so now.

Gary, looks like you upped the ante to 18.8mph. I live a Florida as well and hope to catch some of the same wind Sunday afternoon.

I paid the price though, forestay bridle snapped and we had to paddle/walk it back to shore. Somewhere between 1/4-1/2 mile best I can recollect.
To be fair the shrouds (OEM 1995) were corroded inside.
To be honest I do not know if that speed was momentary or sustained. After making it back to land I simply the read the max speed reading.

How not to return to the launch.
