Not a wave but my European Hobie 13 with same specs as wave and an added Hobie 14 Rigg for compensation of my 87kg :) 15 knots are not a big problem...and smartkats are slow. But i want more...

I have a wrist mount Foretrex GPS, I have exceeded 15 in 15-20 winds but I am not happy with that speed. It can go faster.

Very close to my reading on Oregon 450 gps (12,9 knots which is near 15 mph).

Guten Tag, Metsche
Nicely done video. It was interesting that you smoked both SmartKats (even the one with the extended Racing hulls)...
And to think I almost bought one of these overpriced 'Cats'.

You mentioned that you wanted more speed...as we all do. We both seem to suffer from our Genetics by being tall and weighing almost the same amount (by 3 kilos).
Not a huge deal (no pun intended). Simply beefing up the rigs as you have done can make the difference from being a kid sailor and using these boats to suit ourselves, imo.

Your boat looks like a Dragoon with your modded rig? It also looked like your jib is running really high attached to the bridle. That would mean that the head of your Jib was near the mast head? If that is the case, have you considered getting a bow spreader kit from the US Wave stuffing the bar with a hardwood dowel (or an inner pipe) for strength and attaching a longer jib to the middle of the spreader bar?

An experimental compromise might be to mount the foot of the jib lower on the bridle with a wider cross brace before resizing your sail. As we both know, an oversized jib could drive your bows into the 'U boot zone'. Your thoughts on that would be highly appreciated. If you have already experimented with that idea, I understand, and look forwards to your results.

Having looked very closely at very fast Cats, a long and narrow, stiff battened head sail seems to work better than a simple jib that has a long foot. The difference between the Mono hull jibs and the Cats is that the current Mono hulls (of comparable size) have far more potential buoyancy on their bow than the limited buoyancy on the bows of a current small Cat such as the Wave or the Dragoon.

I would really appreciate some photos of the mast head of your jib rig and closeup photos of the 2 to 1 purchase you use for your jib sheets. It will be only used for experimental purposes.

As I just installed an Asymmetrical Spinnaker to my US Wave, I hope we can share information to benefit us both for the 'Need for Speed!'.

(my apologies for my many edits as I really wanted this post to be right). Am besten Wünsche von Kanada

Danken Sie Ihnen im voraus
Tri

Not sure how fast in "relative" terms but this has got to be the most insane, "spazztic" video on youtube I've ever seen. Sailed with a guy with a lazer about a month ago on my wave. He kicked my butt in light air. But, once it went to 15-20 he went home.

How fast is the Hobie Wave? Answer. (16.4 mph)
I hope this speed record gets broken soon.

Hello Tri,
Sorry, I did not have a look into the forum since a long time. The reason is, that I sold my Hobie 13 and replaced it by a Topcat F2. The Topcat F2 is a German construction. also car toppable and you need no toolkit to put it together. It is 4,85 meters long and has a 7 meter mast. It comes with 15 sqm sail area (alltogether) and I did my first ride two weeks ago. The result was: Again smoking the smartkats, much more boyancy of the hulls and a dry ride. Now the same again, I cannot stop tuning these birds and therefore I ordered a Hobie Tiger Job. Will test it in one ore two weeks when we have a big Cat Meeting here in Germany where all different inflateables will be subject to smoke :)

Looking back to the Hobie 13. It was perfectly tuned at the end. I changed the top of a Hobie 14 sail to make it fit to the 6,3 Meter mast of the 13. Added the original Hobie 14 jib and I was fine.
The Hobie 14 jib fitted to the original connection point at the mast. So no change was necessary there. The problem was always the little boyancy of the hulls. The tramp was very deep in the water and when there were waves, it was a pain.

Here is a bad video of my topcat from the ride two weeks ago.(not yet tuned)

What about your setup?

Best greetings, Michael
