I have seen many things used. Dry lube is great and does not attract dirt. Some people use bar soap(washes off if you don't like it), and others use bees wax. Wax tends to hold dirt so I don't use this. The first thing I would do is clean out the luff track. It is amazing what a small amount of dirt will do. I also use a plastic polish (car wax will do) to protect and clean the track. Clean and slippery is what you are looking for. You may also want to check the wheels at the top of the mast. Are they turning under load, or are you burning groves in them with the halyard. If they don't roll under pressure, this may be your issue. If you were able to pull it up by hand, but not with the line, check this too.
