I just got a 1984 Hobie 18. We live in Memphis, TN and to the beach just once or twice a year. I dont have Cat Trax and dont want to shell out the bucks for a set that we just use a couple times a year. Any good ideas for a temporary solution?

It kind of depends on how far you have to pull the boat. One old solution was 8" long or so sections of 1" PVC pipe tied to a piece of plastic or even a piece of plywood for each hull. The pipes are spaced about 6-8" apart for a run of 8' or so. Plywood is good over rocks or uneven ground, plastic sheet (think solid tramp material) is easy to roll up and store. The Line was passed through the middle of the pipe. The idea is that the pipes roll as you pull the boat over the top. Once you clear the section, just move it to the front of the boat and start again. In practice, the pipes don't roll too well, but the pipes offer lower friction than sand so the boat slides easier.

Or you could borrow wheels from a friend that sails at your site if possible.

Hey thanks for the idea. I'll think about this design. Maybe use plastic that is fairly stiff but will roll up.
