I got a surprising number of scratches and gouges from just one along-side slide along a dock. Does anyone have fenders on their wave to prevent this? What do you use? Is it dorky looking?

If it's your dock, go to Menard's or Lowe's and get some cheap indoor/outdoor carpeting, and use it to cover the sides of the pier. If it's not your dock, get a strip of the carpet and put grommets in the corners, then hang it from the bow-eye and the pintle on the side nearest the pier when docked (and roll & stow it while sailing).

The plastic is tough when it comes to impacts, but is soft when it is scratched. That's another reason to not dock it at a wooden pier.

Personally, I keep mine on a sandy beach, but I used I/O carpet on the planks of my trailer to prevent abrasions.

In this case it was a public lake and I was just docking to pick up my wife. I wouldn't want to throw out a piece of carpet that runs the entire length of the boat just for that.

Any simpler solutions :?: ?

Oh, I thought you meant to leave it there on a regular basis.

Anything you can put between the boat and the pier will help. Take an old sweatshirt and tie the sleeves to the hiking straps, and hang the body over the side. Or use sneakers and tie the shoe-laces to the hiking straps.

If you want to get creative, this might be a good opportunity to utilize the threaded holes in the middle of the sides. A piece of white PVC pipe (maybe split length-wise) attached there would tend to blend in with the side, but provide some distance between the wood and the hull. You can buy rub railing from West Marine, but attaching it could be difficult.

I used the wrong term, it should be fenders.

You're right! They act to "fend off" the boat from the pier. The fenders on cars took their names historically from boats, because they protected the side of the car.

And remember also that the wooden structure you walk on is the pier. The dock is the boat's parking place, generally the water beside or between the piers.
