Bigger Main for A Wave

Le me start out by sayin that I love the size/weight of the Wave. It is a great boat and I love it's simplicity. That being said, the Wave could use more sail without more complexity.

Has anyone every found a bigger main for a Wave?

How about mounting a Getaway Mast/Main on the Wave? The dimensions are close and a couple of new stays could make this happen!

Tough to power it up and not pitch pole more.

I don't know much about sails but it would seem that a slightly different sail shape could easily give the Wave another 20sf of sail area.

The Getaway sail flares aft from the clew where as the Wave sail just heads right up from the clew. Additionally, the Getaway sail appears to have a longer, squarer head than the wave sail. Couldn't one combine the shape of the Getaway with the dimensions of the Wave sail to come up with something alittle bigger for the wave?

In your opinion, would 20sf of sail make much of a difference on a Wave?

I'd just like to go faster without adding any more complexity (ie, jib or hooter). On a really windy day, I could use the standard Wave sail and on other days I could use a larger sail - just like windsurfers and kiteboarders use different sail sizes depending on the wind.

Someone must have worked on this!

I had a new main made a few years back.

It was much larger and worked really well.

I sold my wave last month and kept the sail thinking it would fit the 16 I bought. It didn't.

I too think of positive changes that would make better the wave.Fact is! the wave is perfect the way it was designed by Hobie.You need to go faster? Go out in higher winds and learn to control the wave in winds, let's say 25-35 kts! I have and let me tell you that the wave is perfect for higher winds as well as low wind conditions.
Keep your wave for high wind sailing and buy a larger Hobie for faster speeds.

Sorry to stir up an old thread, but was poking around on the HCE site, and noted a few couple of differences w/ the Euro version of the Wave. One is that the main is different. It appears more square towards the top, and has 6 battens instead of 5. Oh, and the specs list it as 9.2 sq. m, equiv. to 99 sq ft. The U.S. version is a little smaller at 95.

2007 Hobie Wave

Here you can see how the "euro" wave looks like. My Wave was bought in May 2008. It has 5 battens. May be they sold me american version?

Hmmm..I guess I made the wrong assumption based on the illustration on the euro site. It defintely shows 6 battens. Either way, it is a different sail. Slightly different shape. And cool pastel colors we don't get here in the states!
