Mimi or anyone....For the Hobie MWE, its says you need

Proof of $100,000 USD current liability insurance is required.".....What is that? I have Homeowners Ins....I have a Umbrella policy also, I have auto Liability to the Maximum ( 500K)....I don't have Boat ins. for the Hobie Wave...I DO have boat ins through Boat US for our other 5 boats......

Do I need to get Boat US Ins for the Hobie Wave??? To race it.

Call your homeowner insurance agent. You may have liability coverage for a sailboat under 26'. A Certificate of Insurance from him should do the trick.

Virtually every home owners policy will have the coverage. If it isn't enough, they can up it for pennies.

Good to see some virtual Wave action on MWE's. I'm really excited cause I got a spot on a Fleet trailer so I can bring my own boat!!!

Thanks guys, for answering the insurance questions.

I used to have a separate policy for the boats (Wave and 16) but it wasn't worth the extra money. They are now covered under our homeowners.

LOVE it.
That's the way our families has been Hobieing for years. Mid-winters has always been an adventure for the Korzeniewski's (my maiden name) and Appel families.

<<Looking forward to meeting y'all. >> Ditto :D

Mimi, I looked into $1m unbrella policy and it would add $200 or $300 per year (I have the exact number at home). They (Allstate) also requires a certain level on your auto policy, which is not a bad idea anyhow, but you're sort of paying twice one could argue. The $200/300 figure includes the added auto coverage.
Peopel can (try to) sue you for anything nowadays, and even if you win, you have the legal costs, and God help you if you lose! I'm not sure exctly what the unbrella policy covers though, and I have not yet looked into the details.

PS: Mid winters? It is Spring!

I would look for another company.

I have Travelers on my house and car and get 500,000 boat liability as part of the deal.

Well, I just checked with State Farm on my Home owners Ins. ....and They SAID, Yes, you have Liability on a Sailboat...."AS LONG AS ITS NOT RACING"....:D...for them to cover any liability for racing I need a separate wavier...its about 50.00 bucks a year....I think. State Farm told me that No policy covers liability for racing anything, Except for a sailboat and then you need this special policy for racing a sailboat. Regular liability is included as long as you're not racing.....

Umm...so do I tell them its not for racing?....Does Hobie care or Does Hobie have to be named on the policy?....I've never had to do that for any other regattas, so I don't know how much of a stickler they are about it.

Have the agent show you the inclusions/exclusions in the policy. You do want to disclose everything including your plan to race. If the policy covers racing or if you need added coverage and buy it, then you are good to go. Find out what you really have before you have a loss. Terrible to have to tell your friend that the damage to the boat is not covered, and neither is the injury they got in your port/starboard collision. Things happen on the race course, and it is best to be able to say "sorry about the damage, my mistake, here is my policy number and agent's phone number, now let me buy you a beer." It is a much better/nicer way to end a bad situation.
