Is a downhaul that is more complicated than a piece of string allowed on the Wave? I don't think it should be, but the rule says "3.1 Mainsail downhaul purchase shall not exceed 3:1 and may be rigged in any manner."

To me "in any manner" includes this

That looks to me like it conforms to the words, if not the spirit, of the rule.

Can you tell that it's cold here and the water is very hard?

Not legal for IWCA but may be legal for HSA rule 3.1

IWCA 10.6 No mechanical downhaul adjustment device will be allowed -- no blocks or cleats (other than the non-mechanical horn cleats on the mast). The downhaul line will be limited in length to 8 feet. There are no
restrictions on the amount of purchase, as long as the 8' line is used.

HSA 3.1 Mainsail downhaul purchase shall not exceed
3:1 and may be rigged in any manner.

I would say that HCA rules appear to allow it. Like Tom says, IWCA does not. However, under IWCA rules you can obtain more than 3:1 purchase with your 8' of line.

I am not sure that the wave needs a lot of downhaul tension.

I would like to hear what Tom has to say about that!

He pretty much smoked us all at the MWE.

How about some tuning tips Tom?

1) I don't think the downhaul is that critical as sheet tension. I adjust seldom and only if it lightens a great deal. Its less an issue with a custom plastic sail as they stretch less... 1/2 as much. Total adjustment is 3 to 4 inch with the Hobie Sail... maybe 2 with a plastic sail.

2) Given the option, I adjust the downhaul more if I could as this option would allow but as for keeping is simple, this just adds more so my thoughts are to keep is simple. JMO

3) Cost S-hook $12.00... Ronstan swivel cleat $54.00.... & Harken 092 is 16.00... Harken single w/bkt 12.00 for a grand total of $94.00.

4) I'm more in favor to allow a line to tension ( pull forward ) the rig downwind. With a loose rig it flops around too much.

Like we had on the 14s.

I brought that up a couple years ago but never pushed it.

I guess we need to write up a proposal for that too.

So much for keeping it simple!
