To All WAVE Racers:

Please read the link enclosed about a Proposal to add new rule 3.3
http://www.hcana.hobieclass.com/site/ho ... mments.pdf

PROPOSAL:
Add new rule 3.3:
A clew plate, measuring not more than 8 in. (20.32 cm) at its longest point may be added to the sail. A maximum of 2-1/2 in. (63.5 mm) of cloth, measured diagonally, may be removed from the sail for installation of the clew plate.

Please consider how this would effect your personal situation and the cost of upkeep of your boat.

Send your comments to [email protected] by August 1, 2013.

OR reply directly to my email ([email protected]) with a one word opinion, YES or NO

Sincerely,
Mimi Appel

YES

And this is why: (Big Whoop said: If you think you might race a Wave in the future with a blown out sail and would want to flatten it a bit, or have a sail you think is too flat and needs extra power since you might have put on a few pounds by then, or you want to flatten the sail out to make it more controllable for your daughter, or you want to power it up to sail through the power boat chop from the jet skis, .... well you get the idea.)

Can't fault that logic when the Wave will without doubt be most people secondary boat that gets raced now and again when the kids aren't beating on it all summer long.

Hey Chris,

Thank you for your PRO comments.

Anyone want to chime in with the CON side?

I think it's important that sailors hear both sides of a rule change.

Mimi

OK Wave Sailors,

I need your comments by this evening 8/7/13.

As Chris Wessels and I discussed this weekend, I'm late getting information on this change. Better late than never and it makes things easier for next time. Dealing with rule changes are time consuming part of growing our Class but not as much fun as sailing/racing our wonderfully simple boats. Promoting attendance at regattas is a high priority.

Thanks to everyone that has commented. I've have a draft ready for finalizing to send off to the IHCA by tomorrow morning. I will check this posting and my email before I hit send.

Sincerely,
Mimi Appel

PS: Chris I have the $5 bucks IOU, checksinthemail, love my raffle prize;>

Would this rule allow for adjustment of the block position while racing? I have visions of someone switching the position of the top block in the clew plate to allow for for different upwind vs. downwind sail settings. Anyway, if you don't want this setting to be adjustable during a race, you may want to add that into the rule wording. (Disclaimer- I'm not a Wave racer, so you can completely ignore my input if you want).

Ok Sports Fans, the results are in. HCA Class Chairmen, Pat Porter, said "you have a good cross section of the Wave Fleet and they all make valid points." The information that went into the IHCA Rules Committee today is copied below. It's in their capable hands now. THANK YOU to everyone that helped! Waves ROCK!

Mimi

Date: August 8, 2013
To: IHCA Rules Committee
From: HCA-NA
Subject: New Hobie Cat Wave Rule 3.3 Proposal

Please find attached pages containing comments, for and against, the proposed Rule 3.3 from N. American Wave sailors.
25 Wave sailors cast votes, 13 for the Clew plate addition and 12 against.
Please be advised that efforts were made to enlist all Wave sailors’ opinions.
Respectfully submitted,
Mimi Appel

The attachments were:

Rule 3.3 Proposed Rule Change
PRO

1.) Great idea
Skip Kaub, IN

2.) I am in favor of it. Low cost, gives our IWCA friends one less excuse not to sail HCA. You can add this or not, probably doesn't make much difference, but I am all for closing the gap on the IWCA if Hobie is not going to make a Racing sail.
And this is why; Big Whoop Charles Smith said: “If you think you might race a Wave in the future with a blown out sail and would want to flatten it a bit, or have a sail you think is too flat and needs extra power since you might have put on a few pounds by then, or you want to flatten the sail out to make it more controllable for your daughter, or you want to power it up to sail through the power boat chop from the jet skis,” .... well you get the idea.
Can't fault that logic when the Wave will without doubt be most people secondary boat that gets raced now and again when the kids aren't beating on it all summer long.
Respecfully
Chriss Wessels:

3.) Well, we have made that change to our 1996 sail in order to save it, not wanting to buy another inferior sail from Hobie at a custom sail price. Since I've race my wave in both classes of wave across the country, using both hobie and non-hobie sails, I see nothing wrong using a plate to save the sail. Thank you
Mike Powers. FL

4.) Yes, I'm in favor of the clew plate proposal.
Thank you,
Ron LaPorta Division 11 HCA - Chair
Hobie Fleet 4

Rule 3.3 Proposed Rule Change
CON

1.) No. KISS (keep it simple stupid)
Jim Glanden, DE
HCA-NA 2x Champion

2.) Here is my comment about the Wave sail proposal:
I'm against it. Just few reasons.
One, I don’t like the words "may be added".
It's either we all have it or not. This is how classes start getting divided. Besides, if we want to keep these boats class legal, Hobie Cat factory eventually will have to start making not one, but two kind of sails for the wave. And two, history and experience have said that a clew plate on the main (any kind of main) just doesn't work.
Pedro "The Doctor"
Div 13 Chair

3.) I read this proposal before and agree that it would be a good idea to extend the life of older sails. However, I favor the Hobie Cat comment that emphasizes simplicity.
My vote is "NO"
Thanks for the rule change on the tiller extension. I installed one this year and it has made racing and sailing the Wave more comfortable. I use a Hobie 16 hot stick attached to a pvc pipe attached to the cross-bar with electric tape. If anyone would like to see my design, let me know.
Bill Raska

4.) I vote against it...leather open the sail up together or allow No changes....this is a $150 speed rule change.....
Dan Kulkoski, NJ

5.) I don't care to start modifying the wave. I wouldn't hold the class back if this were somehow helpful.
Bob Longo, NY

6.) I am against the addition of a clew plate. KISS. If I wanted to race a boat full of supposed “go-fast” changes; I would return to the F18 Class. Mimi Appel, NY

is it too late to chime in on rule change? I support a NO, for all the reasons otherwise expressed. One of the best features of the Wave is its simplicity.....

Yes it's to late to add comment; all info gathered is now in the hands of the International Hobie Class Associations Rules Committee.

But it's always good to hear from yet another, Wave fan :D

IHCA Council, Saturday, 21 September 2013
The IHCA Council did not support the addition of the proposed rule.

Dear sailors,

The IHCA Rules Committee received a submission to add a new rule 3.3 to Hobie Wave lass Rules.

Quote:
A clew plate, measuring not more than 8 in. (20.32 cm) at its longest point may be added to the sail. A maximum of 2-1/2 in. (63.5 mm) of cloth, measured diagonally, may be removed from the sail for installation of the clew plate.
Unquote

After the comment period for sailors the IHCA has overwhelming voted NOT to support the addition of the new rule.

The IHCA Council and Rules Committee wishes to thank those sailors for their comments.
