Sounds like the backrests would be the cat's meow for you. Using sail management, it takes a LOT of wind before you are 'forced' to hike out on a Wave. If relaxation is your deal, then you probably won't be out in winds that force you to hike out. If you do want to push the limits sometimes, the backrests are easily removed, I believe, so you could always take them off for the days you do want to go way fast and hike out for a while, then put them back on for the casual sailing days.

Naw... the point is that the Wave has short bows. You have to keep weight aft when reaching. Adding the leverage of trapeze weight drives the hulls harder and this is what happens. If he had been on a wire... he would have ended up the wires's length in front of the boat.

Example of keeping weight aft.

For how long can you sail like that?

I sail like that all day if the wind is good. I do have some back pain the next day but No Pain, No Gain! I love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here is the kicker. When I decided I wanted a Wave I watched Craigslist for weeks. A 2008 Wave came up in Houston Craigslist, over three hours away. Since these boats don't come up very often, I took it at $3,800. Literally right after I bought it a used Wave in very good condition came up in Corpus Christi Craigslist, right in my back yard. It has the jib kit and backrests, listed for $2,600! You just never know!

I don't want to trap out in the traditional sense of trapping. I am just trying to figure out how to make it more comfortable to sail for longer periods of time. I want an easy chair on each side of the boat and since I can't figure out how to attach them I wondered if I could use a harness with back support and still sit on the hull. I could even point my feet more in the direction of the mast if that would help.

I had the same problem how to make sitting on the wave more comfortable, particularly in light to moderate winds when there is no need to hike-out. I found this foldable chair:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Highlander-Outd ... B002WUJC5U
It supports my back and it realy brings more comfort on a long journeys. I tie it with the elastic rope somwhere in the middle of trampoline lacing so I can use it anywhere on the trampoline. When not not needed I put it under the strap. I have been using it for two years now and so far I am satidfied with it.

Do you have any pictures of ust the chair tied in place and also of it actually being used? That sounds like a good solution. Thanks.

Unfortunately I do not. You simply unfold and sit as back to the backrest as possible. In order to support your back you must put your legs straight in front of you. It makes a kind of counter balance between your back and weight of your legs. You can also adjust the backrest angle. I usually sit on the hull facing forward, sometimes (it depends on the wind) relaxing on a very front part of the hull (with my feet on the bow), steering with the tiller extension stick behind my back.

Good video but a slightly different application. I am looking for back support for myself for when I am single handing the boat.

Wow, a lot of great stuff in this thread. I've been of the opinion that the boat is best stand alone, but everybody has different needs. Some time ago I read some about putting a trap line on, but thought that without a dolphin striker, the front crossbar could collapse. The front crossbar does bow downward when I sheet in hard so I sometimes think the bar might break. The great stability and safety the boat offers is amazing. It took me 4 tries to pitchpole the boat on a 20mph wind day and that was with holding the mainsheet, standing on the point of the bow and the other hand holding the bridle. After the successful pitch, which was very tame, I was able to immediately right the boat against the wind, yes, with the wind at my back. That really was a great result and I've found that the boat elicits no fear in me in any wind up to about 35. At 40 in a squall two weeks ago, with some concern, the boat was sailable to weather with what appeared to be only the lower clew patch powering the boat. The rest was luffing. I was, however, glad the squall only lasted about 15 minutes and layed down to 25 soon thereafter. Believe it or not!

This was a very interesting topic. I have a good suggestion: if you are tired of hiking, just return to the beach and drink a cup of coffee en kiss your ever enduring wife and return to the sea after a while and go back sailing!! :P
