I am a newbie sailor and was out today on the sea with my hobie wave in 18-20Knots of wind. Suddenly, I see a low cloud full of rain coming toward me at pretty high speed and I did not have time to turn back and beach the boat as I was too far. As I thought the conditions would overwhelm me, I put the boat in safety position and let the big cloud pass over me. Wind picked up quite a lot while the cloud was over me and the waves were also pretty big. I managed to maintain the boat in safe position and after 5 minutes everything was back to normal and I kept sailing and enjoying for another hour :)
I am wondering if what I did can be considered right or it's actually more dangerous then trying to keep sailing.

Thanks :)

I'm no pro, but what you did sounds reasonable.

What is considered the safe position? How is it done?

My understanding of the safe position is to have the sail in irons, but not the boat. Therefor one can simply sheet in to go.

irons is when the sail /boat is pointed directly into the wind and the boat is stalled. think of a prisoner in "irons" (chains) he cant go anywhere. neither can the boat
