Has anyone figured out a way to keep the seagulls off the top of the Hobie Bob? I don't mind the birds, it's the shells, fish scales, and guano that they leave behind when a bird sits there all day, all week.

Has anyone figured out a way to keep the seagulls off the top of the Hobie Bob? I don't mind the birds, it's the shells, fish scales, and guano that they leave behind when a bird sits there all day, all week.

OK, I see boats with plastic owls on them at the yacht club, with seagulls perched on top, but I will try it. If/when it fails, I will try the snake. I will try to get a photo of the results. Mike |

sea gulls are smart..the owl will work for a bit, but they will realize its not moving. they don't seem to like shinny things, so when the owl and snake stop working maybe a strip of reflective tape, also notice from my years of beach operations they never landed on the "rental yellow" kayaks. we would put pizza on there and they would just look at it.....not sure if we stumbled on to something or not. |

I have a plastic Owl that I am going to zip tie to the bob. The kid will love it. 
When that fails, I will try the yellow reflective tape on the top of the bob, Maybe a flashy streamer from the main halyard off the top of the mast. If that doesn't work, I think it's time to engineer a presure sensitive noise maker, or better yet, a presure sensitive paint ball gun aimed straight up, loaded with bright pink and bright green paint balls. Matt, I need a factory reject bob to make the newest Hobie Product, "Mister Seagull" the non-lethal SeaGull paint ball gun.

rig an electrical circuit so when the bird lands the circuit is complete and gets shocked. |

How about using epoxy to affix some nails onto the top of the bob? The nails would have to have large, flat heads. Aluminum roofing nails might be the ticket - that way they'd be shiny, too. Spaced about an inch apart would be about right. |

OK, So the plastic owl is on top of the mast with zip ties, and so far (three days) no seagull poop. I will try to take a picture and post it this weekend. I am in New Jersey freezing and dreaming of sailing this weekend. Parade of lights on Saturday night on Dad's Cat 27. |

Put on your sea legs and get some salt in your blood mate! Birds have enjoyed the coast line long before you and I were here and they will survive us as well. Take it as a good omen that the bird likes your perch and not your head, and remember;you can get an accurate wind direction from nesting bird observations! Just think! birds always face into the wind ain;t it cool? Try feeding it some bread and making friends. They can be very usefull to experienced sailers... |

"...sitting on the Owls head." Today it happened, I unloaded the wave to work on the 20. Almost immediately a seagull landed on top of the plastic owl. One of the trapseat sailors took a picture of it, we will have to wait for the film, but once developed, you will see that the Owl had no respect given. Time to work on plan "B", the seagull shooter.

Surely there is a way to keep birds off the top of a mast. Lets all think about it and maybe we can come up with something. You could always hire some local kid with a BB gun that is fairly strong and just say that you will give him a dollar for every dead bird. |
