Loose screws on tramp

Hi, I'm assembling my 1995 Wave that has been in storage for 2 years. I always checked all fasteners for tightness before most sails. This year I found 3 screws that won't completely hand tighten with a Phillips on the middle tramp cable hooks on both hulls. (Are the inserts turning or are the screws stripped?) The hooks feel solid but not getting them to completely tighten bothers me. I don't want the tramp dropping out on me while stepping the mast or sailing. If they did pull out would it cause any hull damage, is there a backing plate on the inside of the hulls? Anyone who has experienced this and solved it your advice would be appreciated.

A 1995 Model? Not sure, but it s possible that there are backing nuts rather than inserts. The insert wouldn't spin, so stripped threads... or backing nuts.

If it has backing nuts, try to pull the nut against the inside of the hull by placing a flathand screwdriver under the head of the screw and apply a little pressure while tightening.

1st of all, if it is a backing plate or plate/nuts, you may be able to loosen it up and slide it in and out a little, or the nuts/backplates may just spin, even trying to back them out. If either is the case, you should tighten it back up the best you can using the tips from the previous post and call it good.

If it were the fore or aft hooks you were having issues with, you could access the backing plate by removing the seat pads and inspection ports beneath them.

It is probable that it is brass inserts on the middle hooks, and that they could be stripped. Remove a screw and pivot the bracket around to have a look. You should be able to tell if there is an insert in there. If it is stripped, all is not lost. Look into a heli-coil thread restorer kit, see here http://www.helicoil.in/helicoil.htm
