The Sixth Annual Jamaica Bay Kayak Fishing Tournament hosted by Captain Kayak will be held on Saturday, May 16th, 2009. Last year's tournament was a great success, even though bad weather hindered the actual turnout, kayak fishermen from all over enjoying the many activities and great fishing with the cooperation of all three targeted species - bluefish, striped bass and weakfish. This year the event has been moved back 2 weeks, fishing should prove to be better than ever.

Again this year actual competition will be on Saturday with Sunday being the alternate rain day (If we have the Tournament on the Saturday, Sunday will just be a fun fishing day for those who choose to stay around and enjoy the great fishing the Bay has to offer this time of year). Like years past, the park will be open to camping from the Thursday to Sunday, The campground is only a few hundred feet from the launch and we encourage everybody to camp out and enjoy this great National Park. There will be a Friday night Captains Meeting that we encourage all to attend. During the meeting food will be served to all paid participants. Saturday will also be a day to test out all the best fishing kayaks courtesy of Captain Kayak

The purpose of this event is to increase awareness of the incredible natural resource that we have in Jamaica Bay and to promote environmentally friendly activities like kayak fishing and to promote organizations like Casting for Recovery. The tournament will be a catch-and-release event to keep with the conservation theme.

All proceeds from this event go to Casting For Recovery. Casting for Recovery is a national non-profit support and educational program for women who have or have had breast cancer. This group provides an opportunity for women, whose lives have been profoundly affected by the disease, to gather in beautiful, natural settings and learn fly-fishing, "a sport for life."
