The kayaks are hibernating this time of year but I'm learning how to still get some fishing time in.
Got a call from a fishing buddy from MA (Slappy) last week saying he would be up in the area doing some ice fishing, wondered if I would like to join him. Yesterday I joined up with him and Mark Attardo for my first day of ice fishing on Newfound Lake in a quest for Lakers.
Air temp was about 7º but no wind when we got to the lake. Eric was on the ice before sun-up putting in some holes and Mark and I were right behind. I was able to spot him in the pre-dawn light because his sillouette was a bit slimmer than that of a Bob House.
On trout lakes in NH its a two per person line limit so we each had a live bait in the water plus a jigging rod. Slappy was the first one to bring a fish up but then it was a while before I was able to pick up the second fish of the day. I was told it is probably the smallest Lake Trout I will ever see.
It was great to be with two fishing partners and shooting the breeze all morning with a few more swinga and misses. as the morning progressed the sun hid behind some dark clouds and the breeze started picking up but Slappy picked up a third fish. By 1:00 I was getting chilled pretty good and Mark and I started heading for the cars. As we walked off the lake I kept looking back over my shoulder just knowing that Eric would start pulling them up left and right as soon as we left.
Thanks a bunch to Eric for the use of some gear and some fine tutoring and thanks to Eric and Mark for some great companionship, as always, while fishing. Isn't that 99% of fishing in the first place, the comraderie? I will be back out there on the ice again, no doubt about it.
