We were extremely excited about flying down to Rancho Leonero Resort on the East Cape of Baja Sur, Mexico, for six days of kayak fishing. Two Hobie Pro Anglers equipped with bait tanks and fish finders along with a Hobie Revolution had been shipped down to the resort a week before our arrival. A taxi picked us up from Los Cabos airport and the hour long ride to Rancho Leonero Resort was filled with anticipation of warm water and exotic fish species. The friendly staff showed us to our air conditioned room where we prepared our tackle and the kayaks for the exciting days of fishing that followed.

We loaded the kayaks and gear on to a panga that dropped us off in a fishy area where we spent our first day. Our bait tanks were loaded with sardines and a few cabajitos that produced three dorado and a nice pargo.

In the days to follow we fished hard launching from the beach in front of Rancho Leonero Resort and using a panga to transport us and our kayaks to areas that were out of our pedaling range.

We caught numerous dorado, pargo, yellowfin tuna, roosterfish, jack crevalle, snappers, cabrilla, sipjack tuna and a variety of other species. Jeffrey Fortuna, our photographer, took these outstanding pictures:

We left the Pro Anglers and Revolution at Rancho Leonero to add to their existing six Hobie kayaks for guests to use, so if you are feeling up to the challenge the kayaks can be rented at the resort. Check out their website: http://rancholeonero.com/

Looks like you guys had an awesome trip. How did you like those PAs? How did the electronics on the rail work for you? Looks like it might be a good spot to mount.

The Pro Anglers performed exceptionally well! The wind came up a few of the days and produced some 3 to 4 foot wind chop that the boats handled with ease. Most of the fish we caught were fought standing up which shows the excellent stability of the Pro Angler. Being able to stand up in both smooth and choppy conditions gave us an increased vantage point from which to spot surface roaming fish. It was also a plus to be able to work heavy irons and megabaits while standing up. The horizontal rod storage kept our rods out of the way when surf launching and bringing fish on board. The amount of extra storage space and room for maneuverability allowed us to fish for up to 10 hours a day. The rails and mounting boards worked well for mounting accessories like fish finders and extra rod holders and the seat was breathable and very comfortable in the 100ºF heat. The bait tanks held more than enough bait which allowed us to chum live sardines and have plenty to spare for when the fish showed up.

My advice to anyone who hasn’t tried a Hobie Pro Angler is to visit your closest Hobie Dealer and try one out. I bet you’ll love it!
