With a boat speed of app 3 knots, No 14 rapalla, 20lb line, I am letting out about 30m of line behind me...seems to work. I get weeks without a bite then days when I cant stop reeling the fish in. Friend of mine who trolls from a motorboat says he lets out about the same but thinks for kayak fishing I should only run out 10-15m. Whats the opinion of the forum?

Thanks in advance.....

Philip

When I'm just traversing to another area, I run both those approximate lengths. Also depends on what I'm dragging. You'd have to ask the fish what they think. I won't tag either of those lengths as the "answer"....... They both work and distances in between.

When I troll for striped bass, I usually let out 60-75 feet of line. If I am in a dangerous spot (heavy current around tip/rocks/heavy boat traffic/etc), I let out 50-60 feet and hold the rod braced against seat. When pedaling you need to adhere to the current (+1-2 mph)....
