Last Friday was fishing the saltwater on a Hobie Adventyre for the first time. Some guys had short rod leashes used only for stored rods, but at least one guy used longer leashes - or at least one longer leash for the rod he was actively casting and fishing.

What is the best practice: short, long, or a combo? Leave on when fishing or take off?

Thanks.

1. When trolling with rod in forward RAM tube or rear built-ins--always yes--leash on.
2. When trolling with rod in hand--almost always no.
3. When rod in rodholder unattended on ice chest/crate)--always yes
4. When rod in RAM rodholder forward unattended--always yes.

So my bottom line is if I am acrtively casting or simply trolling with rod in hand--rarely, if ever do I use a leash. But if trolling or transporting rods in rodholders, I always go for the leash.

AND (big AND), I always use a leash on my Mirage Drives whenever and wherever used, in the well or out., deep water or shallow, flat calm or choppy. Never a problem with the Mirage, but it can be a nuisance at times with the unattended rods to try and go the "best" route.

Excellent reason to leave leashes on: Hot Sauce, Smelly Jelly, Anise Oil, etc.

$390.00 dollar lesson learned the hard way at Dana Point about 10 days ago.

Btw - I am told flyfishermen have some sort of short wrist to rod leash for saltwater applications.

Hey wo,
A hearty welcome to the Hobie Forum, but sorry to hear about your leash (or lack thereof) problem. One of the guys I fish with here uses no pfd and no gear leashes. He tossed his anchor out this past weekend, and guess wot--he forgot to attach his anchor line! I've been giving him grief about carrying this no leash stuff a bit too far!
