What are you using for downriggers? So far, I've found Scotty Laketroller and Attwood Mini.

I use/like the Canon Mini-troll since it has a built in line/depth counter at the end of the arm.
I also had to upgrade to the sailing rudder as my Outback would not track straight...it became worse as the depth of the lead weight increased.
As it turns out, the sailing rudder and turbo fins are $$ well spent for improved performance. :mrgreen:

Do you use a fish finder? I was hoping I would be able to see the ball on the screen. I plan on getting a Humminbird 170.

Yes, I have a Hummingbird Model 768 Combo GPS/FF unit.
I can't see the weight as my transducer is located just forward of the mast hole in my Outback.
My outrigger is aft of the transducer.....within easy reach of sitting in my seat.
I used Monkey poop/electricians Duct Seal...aka Dux Seal to secure my transducer to the inside of the hull....Home Depot sells the Duct Seal in the electrical department....a 1 pound pug is more than enough to mount/secure the transducer....I used less than 1/2 pound on my transducer.
This works as well or better than Marine Goop and it's easy to remove and relocate the transducer if desired. :wink:

One crank/revolution of the handle is exactly one foot of line. I used my fish finder to verify; sat in 20 feet of water, let out 20 cranks, the ball just touched the bottom. I did the same at 30, 40 and 50 feet just to be sure. If you want, color the braid every 10 feet with a florescent marker or some yarn knottted then super glued to the braid.
I mounted it to the side board on the left with a flush mount.

I replaced the steel cable with Spiderwire 80 lb braid for safety reasons. (If somehow the cable snagged, it could flip the kayak. The braid is strong but cuts very quick with a simple knife.)

I use a 4 lb downrigger weight

Believe me; you do NOT need a heavier weight. The braid is much thinner and cuts through the water with less drag and at trolling speeds around 1.5mph there is almost no plane.

I attach the ball to the braid using the top eyelet. On the tail eyelet I use my flashers;

I then attach my fishing line about 2 feet above the ball and about a 4 foot lead.

On on line I use a dodger and 12" behind that, my lure.

This way, my line falls in line behind the blades attached to the ball and when I get a fish, I only have the dodger and my lure and not all the flashers to interfere with the fight of the fish.

I use an old Scotty saltaire that I inherited from my dad, mostly with a 5 lb ball and a 48" release clip. The clip goes under the back crossbar and then flipped up to attach to my fishing line. This downrigger does have a counter.

It doesnt look as big as I thought it would. Still, I dont think it will fit my Revo11. Maybe if I had an Outback.

Here's a suggestion; use the butt off an old rod with an old PENN level wind reel for a down rigger. I've done that and it works great. It mounts in a rod holder as well.

I prefer "slide divers" over downrigger.
Dipsey diver rod set in rod holder of your choice; one port, one starboard.
Set slide diver to angle away from kayak (try setting 3 L and 3 R to start with). Decide how much leader to slide thru slide diver and pinch it down on the main line. Start trolling.

Even simpler; 45 lbs copper trolling braided wire line on handline or rod\reel tied directly to 20 feet of heavy mono leader, tied to terminal tackle. It just doesn't get any simpler than letting line out while trolling. (I suggest that only one copper line be out at a time, unless you really want to play with also using side planers).

The hand line specifics; 2 tin or steel pie plates riveted back to back and a 3\4 inch SS bolt drilled through the center of both pie plates as an "axle" to spin in your hand, then a small SS bolt in one of the pie plate rims for a handle to crank with. Direct drive, old school the way they used to catch lake trout down deep.
